Twitter - the mother of microblogging - has experienced a remarkable increase in traffic over the last couple of months. Is it a lucky strike or do they deserve it? (Check Alexa’s Statistics)
What I think is cool with Twitter is that it can be seen as the new "human Index" for the global opinion about a certain topic.
I use to watch CNBC, last week Federal Reserves Ben Bernanke made a statement about the recession in the presence of the senate bank committee. The speach was broadcasted live at CNBC. During the three houor long speach you could also follow the Index of all the major US markets. At closing time quoted Dow Jones Industrial Average 3.3 percent higher, at 7351. S & P 500 Index climbed 4.0 percent to 773, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 3.9 percent to note, 1442.
In the future I am sure we will see Twitter and other microblogging sites more used in live broadcasted TV (CNN, BBC, CNBC), Events, SNS and sites like Ted.com to follow peoples opinions.
"Twitter, in other words, is precisely what you want it to be. It can be a business tool, a teenage time-killer, a research assistant, a news source — whatever. There are no rules, or at least none that apply equally well to everyone."
Well I am not a fan at all. But I think that all of us has to try these things, in order to know what we are talking about with clients etc and you could find some cool opportunities and new usage for it.
I would at least feel like a hack if I hadn't tried it. Doesn't mean you have to spend all your spare time twittering ( scary word) but at least do it for a couple of days.

Hell yeah! I fire up my irc client like once a year just for the sake of it (and it's mostly the same ol' nicks around in the rooms as well). :)
Back on topic, I think twitter has the potential of killing off the text message (sms) and handle some stuff that we currently email. + the broadcasting part (anyone want to join me for.../anyone know a good place to..).
It's an interesting mash between micro blogging (in the literal sense) and chat. Somewhat like a chatroom where the conversationstarters are the updates (what are you doing right now).
Heavily dependant on having people that you feel like talking to added. And if your friends aren't signed up, it'll be pointless. (Unless you're the social networker person that always seeks out people and talks with them)
My first opinion about Twitter in September 07 was, what the f… is this. And it hasn´t changed much. Is it the Obama or Stephen Fry effect that has made people go Twittermania? Or have I missed something? Has Twitter developed so much lately or is just a message that contains maximum 140 characters all we need? I don´t know, maybe it is? I´m probably one of the worst user´s of Facebook (even if I wrote in my status bar an hour ago, and that´s pretty much all I do in FB…) so these social media things maybe just don´t fit me. Having said that, maybe I should forget FB and try out Twitter for a change? The question is, who should I follow, and who should follow me on Twitter? I guess friends, close ones, cause I couldn´t give a rats ass if Stephen got stuck in an elevator or not, even though I like him as a person.
Okay... My filter is on the most secure setting at the moment, nothing is getting through.
I know there's some value hidden in the system - so many people can't be wrong (or can they)?! But it's really difficult for me to learn to use it, it's not like MySpace, Facebook, blogs, Spotify, Last.fm and all the other "services", where the incentive for joining is crisp clear to me. Maybe I'm just getting old...
I've never understood the value of Twitter, a whole website for just your facebook status. I've understood that some people use it as a kind of group chat tool, which is interesting but not really what it's for (at least not according to the little informational video on their site). The increase in traffic I think is due to the fact that interesting, supposedly Obama and the Dalai Lama, people have joined Twitter and other people want to know what's going on in these peoples lives. So they also join just to follow them.
I use my twitter as inspiration following other to get new links and such...
sometimes a talk to people...sharing my links..
if you use tweetdeck you can get rid of some of the @ replies...
as everything u have to fitler out whats interesting, put your friends in one category, news in another etc.
I'm totally new to it, but I like it.
